Southborough Common Guided Walk

Southborough Common, Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN4 0RU

Join a guided walk around Southborough Common & learn about its heritage from signs on the ground still visible today, including the site of an old windmill. Learn about the natural history & habitats on the Common & admire its numerous veteran trees.

The Heritage Lottery Funded “Secrets of Southborough Common” project enabled us to look at the heritage of Southborough Common and its place in the local community in some detail. From January 2017 to December 2020 projects to investigate heritage included a comprehensive historic landscape and archaeological report and assessment of the ancient and veteran trees which grow there.

Join us for a gentle stroll around the common, following the route of a circular walk created as part of the project. We’ll walk through Whortleberry wood and see its ancient woodbank boundary feature, see the site of an old post-mill dating back to the late 18th century and numerous other features still visible from man’s industrial past on the Common.

Along the way we’ll recognise the different habitats and discuss plants and animals that live in the area whilst admiring the numerous veteran trees which are a feature of the Common.

Come prepared for a walk of up to 2 hours over uneven surfaces which can be muddy at times.

Ian will be leading two walks at Southborough Common on the 18th September. The first one is 10.00-12.00, and the second is 13.00-15.00. Spaces are limited so booking is essential. To book on to one of the walks, please visit:
