Sherwood Lake Circular Walk
Protect
Kent High Weald Partnership manage this site for nature and for people so that both the local wildlife and residents can enjoy this beautiful woodland. To ensure it is protected for both, we need to carry out certain management tasks. One of the biggest tasks here at the moment is removing the invasive cherry laurel and rhododendron. These plants, which may look nice in a garden or their native home, are extremely invasive and detrimental to UK woodland habitats. They take over the ground and shrub layer preventing other native plants from growing and reducing the biodiversity of the area. Therefore we spend each winter cutting and clearing the extensive invasive plants in the Sherwood woodland. If you want to help, check out our volunteer page or get in touch.

Did you know that Sherwood Lake and Woods was briefly the garden of electrical pioneer, Sir William Siemens. Siemens lived at Sherwood Park (now Badgers Holt) in the late 1800s and used the grounds for recreational purposes and to experiment with electrical engineering. If you look closely you will find remnants of his work, such as the iron tank which pumped water up from the lake to the house and garden, the brick foundations of his walled garden, an avenue of London plane trees, and the metal fence posts that lined the carriageway between the house and the lake.
Enjoy
Sherwood Lake and Woods is home to a variety of amazing flora and fauna all year round including bats, badgers, foxes, woodpeckers, kingfisher, butterflies, toads, and frogs. On your walk how many different species of plant and animal can you see? Why not send us your photos or put them on the Sherwood Lake Facebook page?
