Snipe Wood

Site Information

Snipe Woods is a mixed woodland near Pembury, combining areas of broadleaf trees with conifer plantations on a PAWS (Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site). Much of the woodland is relatively young, having been planted within the last 50 years, and is now entering a new phase of active management.
Our vision is to restore and enhance biodiversity by harvesting conifer compartments and allowing them to regenerate naturally, encouraging native broadleaf species to re-establish. Management will also include thinning selected broadleaf areas, creating glades, and improving rides to support wildlife and promote healthy woodland structure. These actions will also help increase the diversity of bird species, providing improved habitats for a range of woodland birds.
Historically, Snipe Woods was known for its reptile populations, but these have declined with the reduction of bare ground and the planting of woodland species. Through the creation of glades and open spaces, we aim to improve habitats for reptiles still present, such as slow worms, common lizards, and grass snakes.
The site plays an important role as a water catchment area, with a stream and pumping station supporting local water supply. Visitors can enjoy a network of footpaths throughout the woodland, which form part of the Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk, offering scenic routes for walking and wildlife observation. Please note that parking is limited to a few locations, so plan your visit accordingly.
Snipe Woods is owned by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and forms part of the Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) scheme, ensuring that its management delivers measurable improvements for nature. Through sustainable practices, this woodland will continue to provide a valuable habitat for wildlife and a peaceful space for the community to enjoy.”
